The Galaxy S8 is coming real soon - the company has confirmed its launch date to be March 29th 2017. This year’s revision will be a big step forward for the Galaxy S series in terms of design, as the trailer video (below) shows. So what do we really know about the phone?
Let’s round-up the rumours:
A fresh, bezel-less design:
The Xiaomi MiMIX and LG G6 have already proved that the future of smartphones includes small bezels, large screens. The iPhone 8 rumoured to come this year is also suggested to cut down on bezels and the physical home button. The same is the news with Galaxy S8 rumours - a longer display curved on both sides, with almost bezels on the sides and smaller head and chin. There will be no physical/capacitive buttons and will instead be replaced by on-screen buttons.
The Galaxy S8 will come in two sizes, a larger 5.5” model and a 5.1” model. We are unsure about this though.
The back of the phone will look fairly similar to the Galaxy S7 and Note 7. There will likely be no dual-camera setup. The fingerprint scanner will be placed at the back right beside the cameras which is a weird position, but the idea is to push users to use Samsung’s iris scanning technology to unlock their phone.
Display and Internals:
The S8 will obviously be the most powerful Samsung phone available. It is said to use the Snapdragon 835 processor in USA and China and Samsung’s new 10nm 3 GHz Exynos 8895 in other countries. These power efficient chips will be able to handle the Quad HD or 4K OLED display without draining much battery.
As for the batteries, the larger Galaxy S8 model is suggested to have a 3500 mAh battery and the smaller model to have a 3000 mAh battery. The phone should have 4 GB or 6 GB of RAM.
The headphone jack will likely stay, although some rumours suggest otherwise. The microSD card slot should also stay.
The Galaxy S8 will probably carry the best smartphone camera in town. It will be a 12 MP rear camera with an aperture of f/1.7. Specifications wise, this is the same as the Galaxy Note 7, but software enhancements will improve the quality further. The front camera will keep the 8 MP sensor but may feature auto-focus for the first time.
There is a rumour that the phone will have a 'smart-glow' ring around the camera like on the Galaxy J2. This ring light will flash in different colours for different notifications.
It is odd that Samsung isn’t entering the dual-camera space yet. Nonetheless, the S8 camera will be worth looking forward too.
We do not expect major changes to the operating system. One big rumour is that Samsung will have a new AI voice assistant, Viv, that will be like Siri and, in fact, is made by the same company as Siri. I have written about Viv before, when it was first showcased - Viv: how Siri was always meant to be
The Galaxy S8 has a lot of hopes to fulfill. The Note 7 disaster has aroused a lot of interest in quality control and safety, and Samsung needs to deliver with the Galaxy S8.
We can expect the Galaxy S8 to launch on March 29, and sell in stores starting April 21. It should be priced about the same as the Galaxy S7, i.e. starting at $799 for the base model.
