Unique and Innovative. They are the two words every person and organisation strives to achieve through their products. In this series of articles, I’ll share some groundbreaking gadgets I know of.
Article 2: immersis
I’ve written a lot about virtual reality, but it was only VR headsets - from the Google Cardboard to the Oculus Rift. VR headsets are cool: they are perfect for personal use, and they are just round the corner: most of them are coming next year. But what if you want to share a game? You can’t share headsets, can you?
Immersis tries to solve this problem. It isn’t a spectacular device, but it is one of a kind in its technology.
Immersis is a stand fisheye projector that projects 180 degrees around the TV, giving the same immersive experience of VR. As described by Wired, Immersis looks like an outlandish creature from one of Pixar’s movies. And it surely deserves that styling for the technology it packs in.
But Immersis is not just a projector; projection is just one of its several features. Immersis has 3D mapping technology that scans the size, dimensions and corners of your room to generate a 3D mesh of the room. It then uses this mesh to calibrate image and sound in the 3d space, hence providing the feeling of depth.
Immersis also packs in a powerful computer for 180 degree as well as 360 degree game support. Popular games like Call of Duty and Skyrim already support the device. The developer company, Catopsys, has built SDK’s for Immersis so that game developers can take full advantage of the platform.
Immersis surely is both unique and innovative. The device aims make VR a “social” experience, contrary to the personal experience other VR heads provide.
“While VR headsets cut you off taking you to another world, Immersis works the other way around. It brings the other world to your living room where you can invite friends.”- video of Immersis
Immersis is not cheap, and it shouldn’t be. But 1900 Euros ($2220, or 1.4 lakh INR)? That is extremely steep pricing. Hope that price didn’t shatter all your hopes.
