“A new phone, every month” is a bold statement to make.
After attracting a lot of attention through their social media campaigns, CREO, a Bangalore based startup has finally unveiled the CREO Mark 1 smartphone. The Mark 1 is made to fulfil the need for a ever-improving Android experience.
The Mark 1 is a lot about software, so first let’s get the hardware out of the way. The Mark 1 has very standard specs for a Rs 19,999 phone:
Processor: MediaTek Helio X10, 8 X A53 (True Octa Core) 1.95GHz, GPU: PowerVR G6200
Memory: 3GB RAM + 32GB Internal storage
Battery: 3100 mAh with Fast Charging
Display: 5.5” Quad HD (1440x2560px), 534 ppi, Gorilla Glass 3.0
Camera: 21 MP Sony sensor with 4K and 120 fps Full HD video, ƒ/2.0 aperture; 8 MP front.
This makes the Mark 1 a competitive package for its price.
Coming to the software. The CREO Mark 1 is powered by the ‘FUEL OS’. FUEL OS is majorly stock Android with useful additions, which make up the core features of the phone. Perhaps the most important of these additions is the reFUEL app that makes the phone “a new phone, every month”. Through the reFUEL app, you can not only receive monthly software updates that improve the Android experience but also rate them, and recommend features you’d like on the phone. Essentially, the reFUEL does the job of an app store, where the ‘apps' are new features in the FUEL OS. Through user control and recommendations, CREO promises to evolve the phone’s OS and make it better through every software update.
'Retriever' and 'Sense' are the two software features that stood out for me on the CREO Mark 1. Retriever is a safety feature that makes it easy to track down the person in case of theft. Without the need of internet or a connected Google account, Retriever will email the owner the phone's location and phone number information of a lost Mark 1. This feature remains intact even if the phone is reset or a new SIM card is inserted. ‘Sense’ is all about accessing anything on your phone in two taps. By tapping the home button twice at any time, a search box opens up where you can search and call contacts, get support from CREO, open apps and use generalised terms to find information.
Other than these features, the Mark 1 has a free assistant called ‘Echo’ that will answer calls when you are busy and tell the person calling that you are busy and ask to record a message instead. Mark 1 also has an in-built messaging app that segregates SMS into friends, promotional or spam. You can also individually manage notification settings of each app to block out spam. Smart Gestures allows the user to draw on the screen at any time to perform a particular task like take a screenshot or open the camera app.
The FUEL OS is definitely a step in the right direction for CREO, because there is a need to regulate software updates on Android phones. Will this phone make a dent in the Indian market is something we will have to wait and see. For Rs. 19,999 this phone is a well built, promising device waiting for community involvement to enhance user experience.
You will soon be able to purchase the Mark 1 on Flipkart or https://creosense.com. If you book from CREO’s website, you can also custom engrave your Mark 1.
