IFA 2015, held in Berlin, is one of the largest technology exhibitions. This time however, the show was not all that great, considering nothing innovative was on display. Still, there were a few big releases and some products worthy of gossip. Here are my favourite gadgets from IFA 2015:
1. Sony Xperia Z5 (and series)
Sony unveiled its new flagship lineup it IFA this year. The Z5, Z5 compact and Z5 Premium all pack in a Snapdragon 808 and 3 GB RAM. All three have fingerprint readers on their side - under the screen lock button. And all three host the Sony’s latest 23 MP camera that is bragged to have the fastest autofocus on a phone at just 0.03 seconds. However, the big deal is with the Premium: it has the first 5.5” 4K display on a phone. That said, most reviewers compared it to the QHD (2K) display on the Galaxy S6 and said that they couldn’t really see the difference.
2. Samsung Gear S2
This one was probably the most talked about IFA gadget. Samsung definitely wanted its own share of the smartwatch market, hence this new watch. The Gear S2 runs on its own OS, has a circular display and works with all Android phones (even non-Samsung phones). The biggest feature of the watch is its rotating bezel that is used to scroll through menus. It is made to compete with the Apple Watch, and although both these smartwatches are very different looking, they are similar in many ways (the digital crown vs the rotating bezel, for example). The Gear S2 will have its own separate app store and will support Samsung Pay transactions.
3. Huawei Mate S
What do you do to make a great smartphone? Copy other great smartphones! Well, thats what Huawei might have done in its new flagship smartphone: the Mate S. The Mate S looks strikingly similar to the HTC M9. It has a fingerprint reader on the back, just as expected on the upcoming Nexus 2015 devices. And it has a pressure sensitive display, that we are expected to see on the iPhone 6S in about 2 days. Yes, Huawei has built a great phone - top notch specs with features form upcoming flagship devices (expected). Needless to say, its a great package.
4. Moto 360 2nd Gen
Yes, a new Moto 360 is here! Being one of the best Android Wear watches, the new Moto 360 delivers more power and style. The watch comes in two sizes - 42 mm and 46 mm versions and run on the Snapdragon 410 with 512 MB of RAM. The watch’s circular display is its main attraction. And of course, it works perfectly with an iPhone.
5. Asus GX700 gaming laptop
This one is absurd. Gaming laptops very much exist, but all of them lack the sheer performance of their PC counterparts. To help manage overclocking the powerful Intel K-series Skylake processors, Asus build a full water cooling unit for this 17” beast. The back section of the laptop is just the water cooling unit that’ll help keep temperatures down when you are utilising this beast at its best.
And that is pretty much it!
Special mentions: Huawei Watch, Philips AmbiLux UHD TVs
Lots more coming this week, including Apple’s September 9th event coverage. Stay tuned!
