Guess what, everything that was leaked was right!
Yes, today at the Apple Special Event, the tech giant announced it’s greatest new phones: the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. They look stunning an an all new ‘Jet Black’ and ‘Black’ colours, are waterproof and the 7 Plus has dual rear cameras! Most importantly, these phones are IP67 water-resistant and have a force touch home button.
The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus have the same physical dimensions as the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. Apple carried forward the same design with a few minor improvements. As rumours suggested, the antenna lines of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus do not divide the back and instead wrap around its edge. The camera “bump” design is new, partly because of the new camera sensor, that I’ll come to in a bit. Overall, it looks like a natural evolution to the iPhone 6S - and not really a whole new design to deserve the iPhone 7 title.
Apple eliminated the headphone jack on the iPhone 7 (R.I.P. headphone jack) to use the Lightning port instead, because it improves the quality of audio as and reduces the space used inside the phone. In doing so and using the efficient A10 Fusion chipset, Apple has improved the battery life of the phone by 1 hour (on the iPhone 7 Plus) and 2 hours (on iPhone 7). Also, this has allowed the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus to be IP67 water-resistant.
The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will ship with Lightning EarPods and Apple also announced the ‘AirPods’ which quiet literally look like the EarPods without the wire. The AirPods come in a small carrying case that also charges the buds. These can be paired to all your Apple products in one go simply by opening the carrying case lid! The AirPods have IR sensors that detect whether they are in the ear or not, and have accelerometers to detect taps - that allow you to control music and activate Siri. In order to make a reliable connection and provide high quality audio, Apple made the new ‘W1’ chipset that powers the AirPods. The AirPods will be sold separately or USD 169, which is a pretty steep price.
The back of the iPhone 7 has a single 12 MP ƒ/1.8 sensor, while the iPhone 7 Plus has a dual 12 MP camera setup, with one wide angle and one telephoto camera. The two cameras on the iPhone 7 Plus work together to capture depth of field in a shot, or can be used for up to 2x optical zoom (and then up to 10x digital zoom). The camera is probably the biggest pro of this device. Both the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus have Optical Image Stabilisation and have 7 MP front facing FaceTime HD cameras.
The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are ridiculously fast; they have an all new quad-core A10 Fusion chipset. Two of the four cores are low power cores that’ll handle simple tasks like checking a message. But when grunt is required, the other two high power cores push the pixels, making the iPhone 7 120x faster than the original iPhone! GPU performance has also been significantly improved. Rumours suggest that RAM has also been increased from 2 GB to 3 GB.
That wraps up the crux of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. Pre-orders open on 9th September 12:01 AM in certain countries including USA and Canada. The phone will ship on September 16th. The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will come to India on October 7th. Prices are as follows:
