My new year resolution for 2016: write daily diary entries.
I’ve tried this before - buying myself a great new diary, writing for the first two days and then… ‘I forgot’. Maintaining a dairy is great, but it is also a pain to carry around, and a pain to write everything you experience that day in one shot. For me, that just doesn’t work.
Being a techie, I knew a solution. And after you read this post, it’s okay if you don’t thank me for sharing this with you.
The solution is an app called ‘Momento’. The developers of the app, d3i Ltd, describe it as ‘the smart private journal that helps you capture and collect memories to explore, relive and share your life story’. Exactly what I wanted.
Now, I’ve talked apps before. I’ve even written about Day One, the classic journal app you must own. But Momento really stuck with me for its unique features.
I discovered Momento on the AppStore in December 2015, because the developers had launched a newer, fresher looking app replacing their existing one. I was hesitant to purchase it (for INR 190) in the first go, but I eventually did because the original Momento (now Momento Classic) was known as a great journal app.
From the moment I opened this app for the first time, I knew it was different. Momento is not just a place where you write, it is a place where you compile a real collection of life activities. The app connects with your social media accounts, including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, apps like Swarm (a Foursquare app) and Moves (a daily step and health tracking app) and even Uber. The app then automatically loads information from it into your daily feed.
I’ll tell you how this helps:
Say you are meeting you friends today. You travel using Uber to the location of your meeting. At the meeting, your friends post on Facebook pictures of you with your friends and write something with the post. You check-in using Foursquare at the place you are meeting and snap a few pictures for yourself.
Now, Momento uses all this information to create a stream of what you did that day without even you needing to open the app! Through the Foursquare check-in, through the GPS location of your pictures, Momento will know where you went. The Uber app connection will even allow you the see how you travelled in the Momento feed. Your pictures will show up too. Basically, you don’t need to write a ‘dairy entry’ because it is created by the content you share, in real time. You don’t even need to sit and recollect what you did that day later, because the app tracks your life all the time. And whenever you need to write your own piece, you can open the app and hit the plus button. Simple!
Considering a lot of us already share so much content on social media, it is great that Momento harnesses all that information to create a larger picture of the day.
My experience with the app has been fantastic. The app is well laid out - easy to access all the option and really easy to locate your posts. The app records your day in the from of a timeline, from morning to evening, including all your social media posts, other connected feeds and your own pieces of writing. It is indeed a good ‘daily journal’ app that can replace your diary entirely.
As of now, I’ve found no major flaws. Sure, sometimes you don’t want to see a certain post from your social media feeds, which you can easily delete on the Momento app. The app also features TouchID support, if you are worried about privacy of your content.
For Rs. 190, you can’t go wrong with this app. And I’ll tell you, even if you hate writing your everyday life, you’ll love it because of this app!
