How often do you see a car inspired by a luxury yacht?
One of the stand-out vehicles of the New York Auto Show is the Lincoln Navigator Concept - the ginormous 400 bhp SUV with gull wing doors.
Lincoln announced the Navigator Concept as an important step in rejuvenating and redeveloping the legendary brand and nameplate. The car has been redesigned inside out, with a more streamlined design and spacious interior.
The all new design has been inspired mainly by uber-luxury yachts - the colours, the wood, the technology - all of it. While the exterior of the car is built to display the notion of power, the interior is sophisticated and welcoming, with the soft leather seats and six fully connected screens behind every seat.
Perhaps the most noticeable features of the concept are the gull-wing doors. Warning - they aren’t coming to the 2017 production model. Nonetheless, the gull-wing doors have been specially designed to show off the interior of the car. The entire sides of the car rise with the help of some cleverly engineered hydraulics, and the footsteps extend in the same slow motion as the doors rise. We can only really hope that the gull-wings arrive in a future production model of the Navigator.
Because it is a Navigator - a top of the line SUV that’s going head-on against Bentleys and Audis - it better be mind-boggling. What you get with this mountain of a machine is more than enough space for 6 passengers, a “custom wardrobe management system” (aka. a closet) and a Revel audio system. Not to mention the 30-way adjustable seats, the WiFi hotspot and the 360 degree cameras. Each of the connected screens are the size of an iPad and you can use them to watch Netflix, listen to Pandora or look up maps.
Now, this is just a concept. How much of the this will trickle down to our roads will depend on Lincoln. But we now know where the company is heading, and what we will see in the next few years.
More from New York Auto Show is coming! Stay tuned!
