Yesterday Sony announced the slimmer, lighter PS4 and the PS4 Pro - two new consoles that replace the original PS4. While the 'PS4' is just a slimmer version of the good old PS4, the 'PS4 Pro' is what really upgrades the performance. (Watch video below)
When Microsoft announced the Xbox One S earlier this year, the PS4 lagged behind in terms of performance. The One S has a faster GPU and can handle 4K content. The PlayStation 4 Pro is Sony’s way of paying catch-up with Microsoft. The PS4 Pro has a more powerful CPU and GPU to handle 4K gaming, as well as High Dynamic Range content. This means games (that are optimised for the PS4 Pro) will be crisper and of higher frame rate. The PS4 Pro will also be able to stream 4K content from Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and YouTube. The design of the PS4 Pro is similar to the original PS4, but it looks a little more “crazy” with it’s multiple sharp edges.

The new PS4 is slimmer and lighter: 30% less by volume and 16% less by weight. Power consumption has also been reduced by 28%. The new PS4 remains as capable as the original PS4, and will be able to handle the PlayStation VR headset when is comes later this year.
There is also a slightly updated DualShock 4 controller with the back glow light now visible as a reflection on the touchpad.
Sony emphasised that everything is inter-compatible with all the three consoles in the PS4 family, including the old original PS4. All new and old PS4 games will work on all the three consoles. Similarly, the all DualShock 4 controllers and the PlayStation VR headset will be compatible with the entire family of consoles. For the PS4 Pro, patches for games can be downloaded that bring 4K compatibility. At release, Uncharted 4 will be available in 4K, and updates for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Mass Effect: Andromeda and Days Gone will be with for 4K graphics.
The new slimmer PS4 will be available on September 16th for USD 299.99 and the PS4 Pro will launch on November 10th, and will retail for USD 399.99.
