At IFA 2016 today, Samsung announced the Gear S3 smartwatch, the successor to the eye-catching Gears S2. The Gear S3 is a little larger, but it packs in a lot of new technology - and it works with an iPhone! The new watch has a 1.3” AMOLED circular display, 4G LTE, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, heart rate monitor, NFC and MST for payments via Samsung Pay.
The Gear S3 comes in 2 varieties: the Gears S3 Classic has a simple design and doesn’t include LTE support, while the Gear S3 Frontier is bulkier but can work perfectly without a smartphone. As with the Gear S2, both the varieties come with a circular rotating dial as the main interface for interaction with the watch. Both watches are rated IP68 for water and dust resistance.
While the Gear S2 was slated to work with the iPhone as well, it still hasn’t happened. However, the Gear S3 will work with the iPhone right out of the box. Samsung has not revealed pricing or release date as yet, but this watch is sure to be a competitor to the Apple Watch 2 - if it debuts on Apple’s September 7th event.
