I’m a big fan of the future. Today is October 21, 2015. This is the day Martin McFly landed in the future from 1985 in the classic movie 'Back to the Future II’. The movie promised a lot of sic-fi for the time, but today, a lot of that isn’t fiction. On the occasion of the Back to the Future Day, here are some technologies that are going to revolutionise mobility.
1. Electric everything: With Earth’s resources depleting at a faster-than-ever rate (just 50 years of petroleum left!), the future will be all about electricity — from clean sources. Cars in the future will definitely be powered by electricity and some really powerful motors. Tesla Motors and BMWi are proving that electric cars are the future, and that sure deserve to be. And the battery technology? We will see newer materials in batteries or, maybe we will just use fuel cells to produce the electricity!
2. Autonomous vehicles: This one is obvious. Driverless, smart vehicles are here to rule the world. The Mercedes Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion is the concept car I’m most looking forward to. These autonomous cars will be smart enough to collect data from hundreds of sources, compile the data and categorise it into pedestrians, traffic signals, cyclists, other cars, large vehicles etc., then calculate the chances of each of their motions, and finally execute the move. All this in a few milliseconds. Basically, we need supercomputers for the amount of calculation (the program will tales consist of 100,000 lines of code) these cars will do to safely tackle the future road situation.
3. Smart Infrastructure: The Internet of Things (IoT) is growing so fast, that it added a few billion devices in just the last year. In the future, everything from your bathroom tap to the satellites in the sky will be able to talk to each other. But how is thing going to change the way we move? Imagine this: You walk out of your house and the door instructs your car to pick you up. Your car drives itself to you. After you sit and choose your destination, your car will route your trip. On the way, your car hears from other cars that there is roadwork going on, and intelligently modifies the route to the next most efficient route to your destination. When you reach, you just walk out of your car, and your car will start queuing the nearby parking slots. The parking slot that is free will reply to your car’s request, and the car will park itself there. Long story short, it is going to be fun, and HUGE.
4. Futuristic vehicles: What about the hoverboards? Yeah, exactly. We will see both personal and public transport take big leaps, with everything from tiny pod cars that chain up to from road-trains, to flying cars that you’ll use for travelling long distances in no time. And there will be innovation in the bicycle and skateboard space too, with smart IoT based cycles and hoverboards. Big hopes here!
There you go. Big things to look forward to, really.
Mobility is going to be big in the future. And whether or not you like it, you’ll be a part of this revolution.
Happy Back to the Future Day! Do make sure you watch the movie, they are great!
