Qualcomm announced their most powerful mobile processor, the incrementally improved Snapdragon 821 processor. The new processor has a 10% faster CPU and a 5% faster GPU, but most importantly, it features support for Google Daydream VR.
Google announced Daydream as a mobile VR platform, and the company is said to debut a new phone, VR headset and remote later this year. The idea is to bring a unified virtual reality interface and app store so that all Android phones compatible with Daydream can take advantage of this technology. However, as of now we do not have any Daydream-ready phone.
But now that the Snapdragon 821 is announced, expect companies to bring Daydream compatibility to their newest phones. The Snapdragon VR SDK will allow OEMs to develop for Daydream. Asus will be the first manufacturer to ship a phone with the Snapdragon 821: the new Zenphone 3 Delux was announced at IFA this week.
The Snapdragon 821 also brings improvements to battery life and overall Android system performance and multitasking, and it supports Dual PDFA (Dual Phase Detection Autofocus) and Extended Laser Autofocus that’ll allow phone cameras to quickly change focus.
With these improvements, newer Android phones are sure to a performance boost, but I’m most interested in Google’s plans with their new Nexus lineup for this year!
