And it will retail for ~$520 (¥3,499), starting November 4th in China! Yes, it is legit.
The Mi Mix is not a great deal different from any flagship put there, be it Google's Pixel or Xiaomi’s Mi Note 2 (which they announced today too). It runs on the current most powerful Snapdragon 821 processor, paired with 4 or 6 GB of RAM. For its large screen size, it has a beefy 4400 mAh battery and has standard 16 MP cameras found in most other flagships. The big deal: a seamless edge-less display that looks shockingly beautiful.
Now Xiaomi isn’t the first company to do this. In 2015, there was the Sharp Aqueous Crystal - a not-so-good phone with a bezel-less display but a very large chin, and Sharp recently updated it (Aqueous Crystal 2). However, Xiaomi is the first to do a good job at it, and put it into production.
The screen-to-body ratio is almost ridiculous at 91.3%, compared to other flagships that barely have a ratio of 70%. The corners of the screen are actually rounded, and for that reason the aspect ratio is an unconventional 17:9 (usually, it is 16:9) to ensure nothing is cut off while watching 16:9 video. The proximity sensor uses ultrasound which allows it to be behind the screen, and the front facing camera is located on the chin. Although the screen size is an off-the-chart 6.4”, the phone is approximately as large as the iPhone 7 Plus, thanks to its design. Xiaomi also didn’t compromise on materials with a glass front and a ceramic back, which makes it one of the best looking phones out there!
While we aren’t sure when this product is going to launch in the American markets, we know for sure that this design will inspire a new era in smartphone design. Props to Xiaomi, the “Apple of China”, for making a bezel-less phone a reality.
